Here’s a bit more info about my background and my approach to tutoring!

Teaching Background

I’ve been tutoring consistently for a decade and have been doing so full-time for 3 years.

  • When I was 16, I was tutoring algebra and precalculus after school and giving last minute lessons to my friends at the lunch table before tests.

  • In college, I started going door-to-door with a mask on to tutor fellow UMich students in Calc 1 and TO 301 during the pandemic and later settled into doing 10 hours of sessions per week out of East Quad and my house as a senior.

  • Following my graduation in 2023, I stayed in Ann Arbor for a year to begin my tutoring career, where I ran 8-10 sessions a day in the Michigan Union.

  • I’m now based in New York City and meet with my University of Michigan students and high school students virtually.

The central question of the past few years for me was whether tutoring was viable as a full-time career. I’m fortunate enough to have received an overwhelmingly affirmative answer.

It’s my hope to be able to get more students the tutoring they need in the future than I’m able to do so for alone. To this end, I have recently taken steps to lay the groundwork for growing into a full-fledged business with additional tutors available, forming Clancy Prep, LLC. My current goal is to bring more tutors aboard beginning in Fall 2026. If you’d like to join the team, please feel free to get in touch anytime.

Credibility

I know what it takes to get my students the academic outcomes they seek as I’ve done it myself as a student, and I’ve already helped many other students succeed over the years.

  • UMich Class of 2023 graduate with Math and Computer Science double major (3.97 GPA)

  • 36 ACT and 1590 SAT

  • A decade of teaching experience and 3 years full-time

  • 1,000+ hours spent working with students every year

What Makes Me Unique

Well-rounded: One might wonder what a math and computer science grad is doing tutoring so much business and economics. I credit my ability to do so to my major program in the math department, Actuarial Mathematics.

  • In plain English, actuarial science is “insurance math.”

  • In practice, it was a very interdisciplinary major which involved considerable coursework in business, economics, statistics, and computer science in addition to math courses.

  • I was also a business major for two years and had considerable involvement with the Ross community throughout my time in school.

The take-home is that I’m no stranger to courses in business and econ, and I have the mathematical fluency to help you make sense of any of the more difficult quantitative concepts you encounter.

Human touch: At times in my academic journey, I found myself disappointed with instructors who couldn’t empathize with the position students were in (for example, a multivariable calculus professor who was frustrated with how we didn’t immediately comprehend something “so simple.”) I’ve made it a cornerstone of my teaching not to neglect the human aspect of my role.

  • I’m a patient person and will never get frustrated with you if you’re not getting something immediately. It’s my responsibility to meet you wherever you are and help you move forward.

  • I have plenty of experience working with students with ADHD, and I know everyone’s brains work differently. I’m prepared to go over any key concept in a number of ways and am quite skilled at finding the explanation that’ll work for you.

  • I’ve got a sense of humor, and I do what I can to create an environment in my sessions that will lighten the weight of any stress you may be feeling from your academic or personal life.

My Teaching Philosophy

Vocabulary: If you don’t have a thorough command of the terminology your course uses, it will be quite difficult to study or reason through problems effectively. I work hard to make sure students have a strong understanding of the definitions of any course-specific vocab they encounter, as this is the foundation of any deep understanding.

Intuition: In my view, one of the most important reasons to consider getting a tutor if you’re struggling in a class is to get help understanding the “why” of the material. I help students move from simple rote memorization to understanding why things are true and why we care, as this type of learning translates much more effectively to exam success.

Practice Problems: Simply put, there’s no path to success that doesn’t involve the student putting pencil to paper and doing problems themselves. Watching Steph Curry shoot 3’s is nice, but there’s no way to improve your shot without physically shooting a basketball yourself. I encourage students to attempt practice problems on their own before the session and bring in ones they’ve found challenging so I can demonstrate how to approach them. Additionally, I am able to write new practice problems from scratch, which is of great use in classes that provide very limited practice material.

My Students

My primary clientele consists of University of Michigan students as well as high school students seeking virtual tutoring in mathematics, business, economics, or statistics.

I also have limited availability for

  • college students at other universities seeking virtual tutoring

  • students in NYC looking for in-person tutoring,

If you are in either of those latter two groups, please send me a message so I can determine if I’ll be the right fit, and we can proceed from there.

  • Ready to set up a session? You can easily do so from my scheduling page.
