Ross Business Major (BBA) Program

Why Tutoring is Useful

I offer tutoring for a wide variety of University of Michigan classes, but I’ve found that tutoring provides more value for Ross students than for anyone else I tutor at UMich. There are a few reasons for this:

  • Ross students have a lot going on outside the classroom: From their very first semester on-campus, most Ross students enter the recruiting gauntlet, first going through surprisingly lengthy application processes in seek acceptance into student business organizations (such as consulting clubs, finance clubs, and business fraternities). Things are especially hectic for sophomores as they are often spending hours and hours recruiting for selective internships, putting considerable time into their Ross clubs and other extracurriculars, and taking TO 301 (considered by many students to be the hardest core course in the curriculum). When one of my business students tells me “I haven’t been able to spend much time on this class this week. I had three interviews to prep for, 2 networking events, and a bunch of work for my clubs” I don’t criticize them at all. That’s just how things are at Ross, and it’s my job to help students catch up after periods when recruiting has taken priority and academics have taken a backseat.

  • GPA matters a lot: As expected, Ross students take their careers quite seriously and often apply for very competitive internships and full-time jobs, where a strong GPA is typically a necessity to get a foot in the door.

  • The so-called “Ross curve” can be unforgiving: According to Ross’s grading policy, in any core course for the BBA program no more than 40% of students can receive A- or A grades. This artificial scarcity of A’s introduces difficulty even to the easier classes since it means that it’s not enough to know the material, you have to know it better than the people around you. No matter how effectively students master a course’s material, a majority of them will get B’s.
